    • Aloe

Our Community Fair Trade organic aloe vera comes from the ‘Tierra del Calor’, or ‘Land of Heat’, in central Guatemala. We work with The Guastatoya Farmers, who cultivate aloe plants on 115 hectares of organically-certified land. They supply The Body Shop with 100% organic, preservative-free concentrated aloe vera gel for our products. Within 6 hours of harvest, our aloe leaves have been packed up and sent to the processing plant, so that the precious aloe gel can extracted while the leaves are still fresh and juicy. Our trade with The Guastatoya Farmers provides an additional income for smallholder farmers like Dona Blanca, who told us that she has been able to send her daughters to secondary school thanks to the money she receives from selling aloe leaves. • Beeswax

Our Community Fair Trade honey and beeswax suppliers use hives hand made from bark, hung high in the forests, to collect our Community Trade honey. To the bees these are penthouses hung high in the trees. The honey they make is some of the finest in the world, as the bees visit flowers unspoilt by pollution or pesticides. Learn More →

    • Cocoa Butter

We source our Community Fair Trade cocoa beans from the Kuapa Kokoo Farmer’s Union in Ghana. Now the largest Fair Trade co-operative in the world, Kuapa Kokoo has been trading with The Body Shop since its formative years, growing from a few hundred members to representing 78,000 smallholder cocoa farmers! We receive high quality cocoa from the Farmer’s Union which helps us make luxurious cocoa butter for our products; in return, our trade helps provide a steady, fair wage for the members of Kuapa Kokoo, so that they can improve their living standards and invest for the future. • Honey

We source our Community Fair Trade honey from the UNESCO Sheka Forest Biosphere Reserve in the southern region of Ethiopia, where African bees distil the nectar of rainforest flowers to create a distinctive floral honey. To collect this precious honey, we work with the ‘bee whisperers’ of Beza Mar, a group dedicated to improving the livelihood of Ethiopian beekeeping communities and maintaining their traditional, natural way of working with bees. • Marula Oil

We work with the Eudofano Women’s Co-operative in Ondangwa, Northern Namibia, to source our Community Fair Trade marula oil. The marula tree is held to be sacred to the people of Ovamboland, and Namibian women have traditionally used marula oil for generations to smooth and moisturise their skin. Now the 1750 Namibian women of the Eudofano Co-operative are building a business and a future on the ancient wisdom of marula. The oil they produce is cold-pressed to preserve its high quality, and enriches our products with its hydrating and smoothing properties. Learn More →

    • Olive Oil

Our Community Fair Trade organic olive oil is hand-picked and cold pressed in the Cilento National Park in southern Italy. The members of the Nuovo Cilento cooperative make oil from an indigenous variety of olives, which they grow on land handed down to them through the generations. The World Wildlife Fund first introduced us to the pioneering work of the cooperative, and we made them our sole supplier of Community Fair Trade olive oil. Now they are one of the largest producers of olive oil in the area, boasting some 300 members cultivating 2,000 hectares of land. Learn More →

    • Sesame Oil

The silky sesame seed oil in our products is cultivated in Achuapa, a community nestled in the hills of northern Nicaragua. The Juan Francisco Paz Silva Cooperative (JFPS) sow and harvest sesame seeds by hand, then carefully press and filter them to produce a rich, high quality oil. JFPS was set up by Nicaraguan farmers in 1990 to combat a dwindling local sesame market, and has now grown to a 275-strong cooperative recognised by UNDP and Oxfam as a pioneering business model. Through trade with The Body Shop, JFPS has been able to establish and strengthen their global sesame seed export business, as well as funding community projects to help improve sanitation, build new roads and enable women to set up their own businesses. • Shea Butter

Our Community Fair Trade shea butter is sourced from northern Ghana, where it has been used for centuries to protect skin from harsh Saharan winds. We work with The Tungteiya Women’s Shea Butter Association to produce the rich shea butter we use in our products. The Body Shop provides the 528 women of the Association with a fair wage, and also pays a premium for the women to invest in community projects. Anita Roddick placed our first order in 1994 after an earlier visit to Ghana where she discovered the natural moisturizing properties of shea butter and the amazing women who produced it. • Soya Oil

We source our Community Fair Trade organic soya oil from Gebana Brazil. Gebana produces soya oil from GM-free, organically grown soya beans cultivated in the hinterlands of the Iguazu River. Gebana comprises around 350 families, mostly smallholder farmers. We have been working with them since 2006, because Gebana differs from much of the soya farming industry, which is one of the major contributors to deforestation in Brazil, by promoting sustainable farming methods and organic produce.
